Deidre Pujols on Turning Philanthropy Into Sustainable Business Models

For many, philanthropy is charity—a noble pursuit often dependent on donations and goodwill. For Deidre Pujols, however, it’s a business challenge: one that demands vision, structure, and sustainability.

After decades working behind the scenes of her ex-husband Albert Pujols’ baseball stardom, Deidre is now redefining her own entrepreneurial identity. Her approach is simple but powerful: philanthropy must evolve beyond donations and into scalable business models.

Building Impact Through Business

Her nonprofit, Open Gate International, has become a testing ground for this philosophy. Initially launched to build culinary kitchens worldwide for vulnerable populations, the organization now emphasizes a hybrid approach. In Calcutta, India, Pujols is designing a kitchen as an LLC—a for-profit business that funds scholarships for at-risk youth.

“This way, the program sustains itself,” she explains. “Those who can pay do so, while survivors of trafficking or poverty are given scholarships. Everyone trains side by side with dignity.”

The Entrepreneurial Blueprint

Pujols is quick to highlight what many founders overlook: philanthropy doesn’t excuse poor business practices.

“Too often, nonprofits start with good intentions but no resources, no plan, and no sustainability,” she says. “My advice: never build a business plan that doesn’t end with giving back.”

Her vision reframes giving as a non-negotiable phase of entrepreneurship. Success without philanthropy, she argues, is incomplete.

Lessons from the Field

Funding remains the most pressing challenge for any nonprofit. But Pujols has also learned the power of branding—sometimes painfully. Her first major nonprofit in 2005 grew rapidly thanks to Albert Pujols’ fame. Now, she’s working to prove her own impact independent of that legacy.

“I want people to see me not just as Albert’s wife, but as a lifelong philanthropist and entrepreneur in my own right,” she says.

What’s Ahead

From Cambodia to California, Pujols is expanding a network of kitchens and trade schools designed to reintegrate marginalized populations into the workforce. And while her projects span continents, her mission remains consistent: building philanthropy into the DNA of business.
