Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Gail James.
It’s an honor to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a is a Certified Clinical therapist, specializing in trauma, grief and substance abuse. I am a motivational speaker, pastor, best-selling author, entrepreneur, CEO, domestic violence and childhood sexual abuse advocate. I was born and raised in St. Thomas, US Virgin Island. From the age of 7 to 11 years old I was molested by my brothers. This was the beginning of my turmoil, devastation, filled with hurt, pain, anger and rejection. I was born to a mother that had 12 children; she married my father who had 15 children himself. I have personal experience growing up in a large toxic family, living with my siblings was not easy at all.
I was known as the black sheep of the family because it was me who told the family secret, and for that reason I was tormented, disowned and rejected by my mother, taken from my home. Ended up being on the street alone and in an abusive relationship that could have cost my child and my life. I deconstructed the myth of withstanding abuse while hoping things would change. The beatings I endured from my partner while pregnant awaken me to harsh realities. The most important part of how I got where I am today, my Faith in God, the love and responsibility of me caring for my 3 children Abigail (born with Cerebral Palsy), Kelvin and Khristian, as well as the continual support from my loving husband Rick, my village of positive family (unrelated relatives), likeminded people.
I’m sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?
No, it was not, I have had many challenges to overcome, one being my health. I have survived multiple strokes, blood clots (my latest being Nov 2022), and seizures. Then there is my own personal childhood experience of trauma, abuse, rejection, all which has allowed me to be intentional, transparent, and dedicated to helping everyone I meet along this journey.
Let’s talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?
I am a licensed Clinical Christian Therapist, I own a counseling and consulting service where I help anyone in need of trauma, mental health, substance abuse counseling and family therapy. I am the founder of 2 nonprofit organizations Sanctuary of Change and Virgin Island for Restorative Care, which provide solutions for victims of childhood sexual abuse, domestic violence abuse and transitional care. I also own Heavenly Home Sweet Home, INC Home Health Agency, that provide care for senior citizens, developmentally disabled, and those that are released from the hospital in their homes or community. I don’t look at a person as a meal ticket, for I am compassionate, and I take personal interest in the individual so that one will reach their maximum potential and become the best virgin of themselves.
What’s your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success?
Your trial and tribulations are setups for your triumph. They were clearly designed to build your character, courage and perspective which will propel you into your destiny. That is why one should remember the 2 most important tools in navigating life and relationships: Wisdom and Courage
Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?
For me success means achieving goals and aspirations, setting a clear direction and working hard to reach that destination. It is about the finish line and enjoying the journey, while learning from mistakes. Most importantly success is about personal growth and development. It is about pushing myself outside my comfort zone and taking on new challenges that help me learn and grow. Success is when I use my God given talents and abilities to make a positive impact on the people around and/or connected to me.
What’s next for you?
Sky is the limit…. With God nothing is impossible, my faith and trust is totally in him. I wake up every day pressing toward my purpose he has placed in me. You ask what’s next, I am opening multiple extensive behavioral group homes to service the individuals in the agency for persons with disabilities. Multiple speaking engagements around the world to help those that desire to be healthy and whole in their mind body and soul. Lastly, I have started up Trauma Coaching and Mentoring and Business Coaching and Mentoring.
Finally, how can people connect with you if they want to learn more?
