Today we’d like to introduce you to Darcell Walker.
It’s an honor to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?
First, I identified something that I was interested in pursuing. Second, I recognized an opportunity to start the pursuit. Third, I was willing to take a chance and go after it. Focus, forward motion, faith, and fortitude undergirds me throughout it all. In junior high school, my goal was to be an attorney. However, because I was good at math, I followed a path to engineering. In college, my first-year engineering professor left to go to law school and become a patent attorney. While I was working as a systems engineer, a friend mentioned that he was going to law school. Listening to him brought back thoughts of becoming a lawyer. In addition, I saw how patent law enables one to combine legal and scientific skills. So I took a chance. I took the LSAT exam and applied to five law schools. Four schools accepted me. The University of Texas gave me a scholarship as well.
Furthermore, my employer gave me a year’s leave of absence. I could come back if I did not like it. After law school and working as a patent for 10 for two corporations, I decided to start .y own practice. My experience revealed to me that most people do not know much about the process of developing and protecting ideas. Helping people understand how to pursue their ideas become a passion for me. My professional activities reflect this goal.
I’m sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?
Similar to many businesses, a significant challenge for me is marketing. Intellectual property is less known or familiar than other areas of law. The number of people who need my type of service is small compared to other legal fields. In addition, my personality could be more outgoing. I must explain the importance and benefit of protecting their ideas in many situations. The constant challenge is to encourage people to continue to pursue their ideas.
Let’s talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?
I have an intellectual property law practice. My mission is to help people who have new ideas for products and services but do not know how to develop them, do not know where to start, or are afraid others will take them. I will help a business identify activities that produce intellectual property assets, determine the proper protection for these assets and manage their intellectual property portfolio. I also work with churches, ministries, and other non-profit organizations, helping them secure ownership of and protection for works (intellectual property) created through their activities.
I have created various easy-to-understand products and training resources to help inventors develop, protect, and market their ideas. From free primers to individual coaching and consulting, my resources help you take your idea from conception to commercialization.
I want to help people break through the barriers that stop people from pursuing their ideas. I am an expert on this topic because I have over 35 years of experience as a patent attorney helping people protect their ideas. I help by explaining the various steps of the product development process and the activities during each step through my books, training resources, programs, workshops, and individual consultations. With my help, an inventor will create a strategy and road map to develop their idea. They will know how to protect and commercialize their million-dollar ideas and develop products and services to enhance society. Similarly to taking a road trip, one needs a plan and a path when creating a product.
What’s your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success?
First, see yourself as successful. Before one begins a
venture, one should see the accomplishment of the desired goal. One has to visualize how they want it to be at the end. In other words, visualize your victory. Too many people hope they can achieve but do not fully see the accomplishment. They still have some doubts about what the outcome is going to be. See it before you complete it.
Second, suppress other people’s skepticism.
Whenever you set out to accomplish something, everyone will not
share your enthusiasm or support your efforts. There will be nay-sayers and people to comment that you do not know what you are doing.
It is one thing for someone to offer advice to enable you to
avoid prior mistakes of others. But people who criticize and are skeptical will not help or support you. The best approach is to ignore them. Further, seeking approval from individuals who have yet to have your best interest in mind is problematic.
Third, be secure in your own skills.
You have a unique set of skills, expertise, experiences, and a desire. You were created to do things only you can do. People will discourage you. Others will want to tell you how to do something. But it would help if you did what works for you. Be confident in your capabilities. Do not give up when you know you can do something.
Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?
Success means having peace of mind. Success is setting a goal, formulating a plan, implementing that plan, and accomplishing the goal. Success is doing what you want on your own terms and time. Success is being able to help people who cannot return the gesture.
