A powerful display of martial arts unity and respect unfolded on September 7, 2019, at the Ridglea Theater in Fort Worth, Texas. Nearly 800 martial artists and supporters came together for the inaugural J. Pat Burleson Invitational Karate Tournament. Organized by Grandmaster Jamie Cashion, the event was held to honor one of the most iconic figures in American martial arts history, Grandmaster J. Pat Burleson.

This star-studded gathering featured eight live-scoring kickboxing matches, over 40 10th Degree Black Belts, and a rare public appearance by legendary martial artist and actor Chuck Norris. The evening’s energy was a testament to Grandmaster Burleson’s enduring influence and Jamie Cashion’s commitment to preserving martial arts heritage.

Grandmaster Jamie Cashion, a 9th Degree Black Belt and respected first responder, was the driving force behind the event. Determined to support Grandmaster Burleson in his time of need, Jamie Cashion used his decades of connections in the martial arts community to create an unforgettable experience that merged tradition, entertainment, and philanthropy.

“Grandmaster Burleson is my hero,” said Jamie Cashion. “This was the most difficult event I have ever put on. It pressed me to the limits.”

Despite the immense effort required, the event exceeded all expectations. Martial artists and fans traveled from across the country to attend. Fighters drove in from as far as California, many covering their own travel expenses to pay tribute to a man they deeply respected.

Chuck Norris Headlines a Night of Legacy and Honor

Thanks to Jamie Cashion’s close relationship with Gena Norris, Chuck Norris made a special appearance at the event, adding both star power and heartfelt emotion to the proceedings. Norris, who has long considered Grandmaster Burleson a mentor and friend, joined hundreds of attendees in expressing gratitude and admiration.

Chuck and Gena Norris spent nearly three hours at the event, taking photos, signing autographs, and interacting with attendees without interruption. “The Norrises are the most giving family I know,” Jamie Cashion remarked. “It was an amazing experience.”

In addition to Norris, the tournament drew martial arts legends including Cynthia “Lady Dragon” Rothrock, World Champions Jeff Smith, Cliff Thomas, Linda Denley, and World Record Holder Troy Dorsey. Their participation further emphasized the deep respect the martial arts world holds for Grandmaster Burleson.

Honoring a True Martial Arts Pioneer

Grandmaster J. Pat Burleson’s influence on American martial arts cannot be overstated. He won the first U.S. National Karate Championship in 1964 and earned recognition as the “Father of American Karate Champions.” His martial arts journey began in 1957 in Japan, and he later trained under Tae Kwon Do pioneer Jhoon Rhee.

The event served as both a tribute to his legacy and a fundraiser to assist with medical expenses. Approximately $40,000 was raised during the event, which adds to the more than $15,000 already collected through a separate online campaign.

Jamie Cashion’s Commitment to the Martial Arts Community

Jamie Cashion continues to set a powerful example in the martial arts world. His ability to rally an entire community to support one of its founding figures speaks to his leadership, humility, and dedication. From organizing large-scale events to mentoring youth and serving as a first responder, Jamie Cashion’s impact reaches far beyond the mat.

The J. Pat Burleson Invitational Karate Tournament stands as a shining moment in modern martial arts history. Thanks to the vision and tireless efforts of Jamie Cashion, this event not only honored a legend but also reignited a sense of unity and purpose within the martial arts world.

As the martial arts community looks to the future, the legacy of Grandmaster J. Pat Burleson and the leadership of Jamie Cashion continue to inspire.
