We live in a world where burnout is glorified and rest is often mistaken for weakness. But Dr. LaVerne H. Collins is flipping that toxic narrative on its head. As a board-certified therapist, ordained minister, bestselling author, educator, and dynamic speaker, she’s giving us permission to breathe—and reminding us that we don’t have to hustle to have a joyful life.
“Hustle culture is not holy. It’s not healthy. And it’s not sustainable,” says Dr. Collins. “We weren’t created to grind ourselves into the ground. We were created to live fully, love deeply, and serve purposefully—without losing ourselves in the process.”
Her Story, Her Calling
Dr. LaVerne Collins knows the weight of being the “strong one.” With over 28 years of experience in counseling, education, and ministry, she has walked with thousands through the depths of trauma, faith struggles, and cultural disconnection. She is the Founder and CEO of New Seasons Counseling, Training and Consulting, and the creator of The MultiCultural Mindset podcast—a weekly liberation space where mental health meets cultural humility.
Her journey is rooted in purpose, but also shaped by personal pain. In 2019, she experienced the unimaginable loss of her 32-year-old son to suicide. That tragedy ignited a deeper mission: to speak up about the unspoken issues affecting Black families and to push the mental health field to see what has long been overlooked.
Her book, OVERLOOKED: Counselor Insights for the Unspoken Issues in Black American Life, shines a much-needed light on the cultural blind spots, grief, strength, and emotional labor of Black women. Her work is bold, faith-fueled, trauma-informed—and it’s healing lives.
Her Message to the Hustlers – It’s about “Soul Wealth”
For the high achievers, faith leaders, entrepreneurs, and caregivers who constantly pour out for others, Dr. Collins offers this reminder: “Your worth is not in your work. You don’t have to exhaust yourself to be enough.”
She encourages a lifestyle of sacred pacing—living and working in alignment with your purpose, not the pressures of the world.
Here are five of her go-to tips to break free from the hustle trap:
1. Honor Your Limits.
Rest is not rebellion. When you hit a wall, listen to your body. Schedule time to unplug. You can’t be present for others if you’re absent from yourself.
2. Redefine Productivity.
Success isn’t just about outcomes—it’s about peace. Did you protect your joy today? Did you make space for stillness? That’s productive, too.
3. Create Soulful Boundaries.
Boundaries aren’t just about saying no. They’re about making room for what matters most: your faith, your family, your healing.
4. Hold Grace and Grief Together.
Give yourself grace when you’re not performing at 100%. Grief and joy can coexist. You don’t have to pretend to be okay when you’re not.
5. Live From Overflow, Not Obligation.
You’re not a machine. When you nourish your soul, your purpose will pour out naturally—without forcing, faking, or fear.
