Few people can transition seamlessly from academia to advocacy—but Dr. Murray Sabrin isn’t most people. After a distinguished 35-year career as a finance professor and multiple campaigns for public office, Sabrin is stepping onto a new stage: grassroots reformer, with a message he believes America urgently needs to hear.
That message is embodied in his new personal brand, MAFI—Make Americans Financially Independent—an idea, a call to action, and a movement rolled into one.
“I’ve spent my life studying and teaching the history of finance in the U.S.,” he tells Forbes. “And now, I’m applying that knowledge to help Americans reclaim control over their financial futures.”
A Legacy of Insight, A Mission of Impact
Sabrin’s background isn’t just academic—it’s personal. As a longtime critic of America’s tax code, exploding debt, and reliance on government programs, he’s long championed a bold alternative: eliminate taxes and empower the nonprofit sector to meet social needs through voluntary charitable institutions.
“It’s time for a new framework—one where Americans are free from excessive tax burdens, and communities step up through charitable giving and nonprofit action,” Sabrin explains.
Overcoming the Noise
While the message is compelling, Sabrin acknowledges the difficulty of breaking through in an oversaturated media landscape.
“The real challenge has been reach. I’ve done many podcasts and radio shows, but they haven’t been on the scale needed to effect real change,” he says.
To change that, he’s developing a broader media strategy, including social media outreach and an affiliate partnership with a respected economic research firm.
Balance in the Face of Challenge
Work-life balance hasn’t always come easily. With his wife’s ongoing health concerns, the past few years have been trying. Still, Sabrin’s unshakable persistence keeps him focused.
“Creating MAFI gave me something bigger than myself to work toward. That’s what drives me.”
A Playbook for the Next Generation
To those embarking on their own entrepreneurial journeys, Sabrin’s advice is clear:
“Stick to your principles. You won’t succeed overnight—but if you have a mission, the momentum will come.”
What’s Ahead?
The future is full of promise—and potential impact. In addition to expanding MAFI through strategic alliances, Sabrin is contemplating another political campaign that could bring national attention to his ideas.
“If there’s a platform to bring this conversation to the American people, I’ll consider it,” he says. “We’re facing a financial crossroads—and MAFI is part of the solution.”
