For firefighters, readiness has traditionally been defined by physical endurance, technical expertise, and the ability to perform under extreme pressure. Yet a growing number of leaders within emergency services are expanding that definition to include something equally critical: mental resilience. Charles J. “CJ” Dickinson II, Battalion Chief and founder of Flashpoint Consulting LLC, is among those helping reshape the conversation. Through leadership coaching and mental readiness training, CJ is working to help firefighters strengthen not only operational performance, but also emotional endurance and long term well being.
That mission took center stage during the recent Metro Atlanta Firefighters Conference, where CJ delivered a presentation titled Size Up Within, focused on helping first responders better manage stress, decision making, and personal growth using principles already familiar to the fireground.
Applying Fireground Principles to Personal Growth
In firefighting, conducting a “size up” is one of the most important actions taken upon arriving at an incident. Firefighters rapidly assess conditions, evaluate risks, and determine how to respond effectively under pressure.
CJ’s presentation challenged attendees to apply that same level of awareness inward.
Through Size Up Within, firefighters explored how internal readiness directly influences performance in high stress environments. Rather than separating mental wellness from operational success, the session positioned resilience, emotional regulation, and self awareness as essential components of effective leadership and decision making.
Presented on May 13, 2026, at the Metro Atlanta Firefighters Conference at the Cobb County Fire Training Center in Marietta, Georgia, the session reflected growing interest in practical mental wellness strategies specifically designed for emergency professionals.
The approach resonated because it translated personal growth into a language firefighters already understand.
Leadership Grounded in Real World Experience
CJ’s perspective comes from years of leadership within emergency services.
As founder of Flashpoint Consulting LLC, he works with fire service organizations and first responders to strengthen resilience, communication, culture, and leadership through coaching, consulting, and practical training rooted in real world experience. Founded by a Battalion Chief and certified First Responder Coach, the organization focuses on helping individuals and teams improve performance while supporting mental readiness.
Recently, CJ further strengthened his credentials by earning accreditation as a Chief Fire Officer through the Center for Public Safety Excellence and completing the First Responder Coaching Certification Course. These milestones reflect his commitment to combining operational leadership with coaching driven development.

A New Model for Fire Service Leadership
For CJ, growth begins with embracing discomfort rather than avoiding it.
“Get comfortable being uncomfortable, that is where growth occurs,” CJ explains, emphasizing the mindset behind his work with first responders.
As departments continue addressing burnout, stress, and emotional fatigue, mental readiness is increasingly becoming part of the broader leadership conversation.
